The Venerable Jeonggak, abbot of the Jogye Order's Wongak Temple in Goyang city, disclosed a map of China Thursday produced by French geographer J.B.B. D'Anville in 1732. The map which also shows Korea, Japan and Russia includes South Korea’s Dokdo and Ulleung Isand. The map labels Dokdo as "Tchian-chan-tao," the Chinese word for Dokdo's old name "Usanguk." The map also notes that, at the time it was produced, Korea was known as the Goryeo Dynasty (Kaoli Koue). The map is known to be based on an older, similar map of China produced by a French Society of Jesus missionary who was ordered to make it by China's emperor.
