The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has issued the location identifier ¡°RKDD¡± to the helicopter landing zone in the Dokdo islets.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority under the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said that a location identifier represents the name and location of an airport and is used for air traffic control and communications.
Of the Dokdo's identifier, "R" stands for East Asia, "K" for Korea, the first "D" for North Gyeongsang Province and the second "D" for the Dokdo islets.
An official from the authority said that it decided to apply for a Korean identifier as Japan continues to challenge the nation¡¯s territorial rights over the Dokdo islets, although the issuance of the location identifier does not mean international recognition of the nation¡¯s sovereignty over the islets.
The RKDD helicopter landing zone is used by the police, firefighters and Korea Forest Service.
